Bereits im Januar hatte Bertelsmann Digital Media Investment das 2007 gegründete Start-up mit 15 Millionen Dollar (rund 10,3 Millionen Euro) unterstützt. FWK bietet seine Lehrbücher kostenlos online an und verdient Geld mit gedruckten oder elektronischen Zusatzprodukten. Unter den Autoren sind auch pensionierte akademische Lehrer.
